Good morning,

we collected a lot of valuable feedback (more demos, fewer slides!) and now scheduled our second Everyday AI Club! This time it’s for Product/UX designers and for the first time with a sponsor, Helsing, and we’re grateful for that because this also means high-quality snacks.

We also changed the approval approach and will be doing it in two tranches. See you on Tuesday, the 7th of July, at Workish.

πŸ“Œ Pinned

This is a funny story from a translator, worth a read. β€œOh. My. Fucking. God.” It’s logical: the less you know about the topic, the more impressive the AI output is. (Have you ever tried to ask ChatGPT about yourself?) This reminded me of a recent chat with a journalist working as a freelancer. They told me that they are sometimes given AI-generated drafts by the customer and that those are really hard to edit. It’s better to just start from scratch.

This week's highlights

β˜•οΈ Coffee Talk

Daniel Szemerey is a trained architect turned quant and data scientist! He's the co-founder of Aperiodic, which builds the market-data infrastructure that funds and trading firms rely on in digital asset markets. Rumour has it he is good at tennis, but I didn’t dare to challenge him. Here is what he prepared for you:

  • Core - Run by a lovely couple who make homely, hearty Korean dishes. I used to work right next to it, and the hardest part of switching offices was not eating there during lunchtime anymore.

  • Little Dieter Needs to Fly - Werner Herzog at his best: you have the feeling Werner himself becomes part of the story he documents.

  • Founders Pledge - I became a member of Founders Pledge a couple of years ago. It is "a global community of entrepreneurs committed to social impact; everyone who joins pledges a % of their personal proceeds to the charities of their choice." My views on issues (such as climate, AI risks, etc) have been drastically updated through their research, talks and meetings.

  • Daniele is inviting you to join his Collective Flow - AI Circle: "Small in-person pilot where participants join small groups to exchange questions, challenges, and practical insights around AI. Add your reflection if you’d like to join the first session."

  • Last week I asked you if you'd like to know what your colleagues earn. The results are clear:

🧭 Career compass

  1. Signals from Monday: Burgermeister expanding to Vienna [careers]; Bending Spoons filed for a multi-billion-euro IPO (owns Komoot, Eventbrite, WeTransfer) [careers]; Schwarz-Gruppe posted €185B in revenue while quietly building a European ecosystem across retail, cloud and data centres [careers]; Siemens Energy forecasting strong growth through 2035 on AI data centre gas turbine demand [careers]; Rheinmetall and Hensoldt planning thousands of new hires as defence job postings jumped 65% since 2021 [careers], [careers]

  2. As already mentioned last week, Germany failed to reach the deadline to implement the EU Pay Transparency Directive. I doubt there will be any serious consequences, worst case being a fine. Here is a deeper dive by Deutsche Welle.

  3. Be careful on LinkedIn - hackers are now using interviews to install a backdoor. Especially relevant for technical reviews.

  4. An insight into Revolut's hiring process for a Data Analytics Engineer. They are also hiring in Berlin. Also from Reddit, the best cities to start a career. I guess it’s obvious that I would recommend Berlin too: you can get away with English, a lot of opportunities and cheaper than London.

  5. Building on last week's job hack (doing background checks on the interviewers), here is a report on how stalking LinkedIn profiles of your interviewers can help. Learn as much as you can.
