hello everyone,
I am happy to announce like its a LinkedIn post but its not… that from now on, jobs on the job board are updated daily. In addition, I made some changes to the structure of the newsletter, so its easier to skim. In addition, from next week onwards, Signals will include more sources.
Let me know what you think!
We are also doing an ad-hoc event next week: for everyone who is focusing on too many things the same time, myself included. Join us for a lunch time walk.
🙏 Please consider supporting this newsletter so that I can keep my independence.

They say that the middle class is disappearing, but what's also true is that, anecdotally, a lot of people underestimate where they stand in comparison to others (just remember the David and Victoria Beckham meme where David calls her out). WiWo has this income calculator which can help you see where you sit in Germany.
According to the data, a single person needs €1,940–3,630 net monthly to count as middle class (Mittelschicht). Over €6,050 puts you in the top 4% (rich?). I doubt that people earning €2k think they are middle class.
This also reminded me of the old saying that comparison is the thief of joy, especially in the times of social media where we don't compare ourselves to our neighbours anymore, but to some random fake-ass influencers.
Where do you think your income puts you?

Submit your project, idea, or if you are looking for something.

🧦 Can you chip in €5 a month?
If Handpicked Careers brings you joy, saves you time, keeps you informed, or just makes your inbox more interesting — consider supporting it.
This is my full-time job and I love it. I do work with sponsors, but they buy slots, not opinions. €5 a month from readers is what keeps it that way.
If you can't afford to support me, read for free — someone else is paying for you. But everyone gets the exact same newsletter. Thank you!
🧭 Career compass
A very valuable reminder from Reddit to always save the job description the moment you apply. The best way is to keep a folder for application with all the files included and even named starting with a date: YYYY-MM-DD Company. Also, times are hard at the moment: and its a numbers game (this Redditor had 218 applications and got 7 interviews to finally land a job). Go on, apply even more and use job boards like ours with direct company job board access (LinkedIn isn’t the best place to source jobs!). I am rooting for you.
We have two forces at play: AI supposedly impacting the job market vs serious skilled-labour shortage. IW says that Germany's skilled-labour shortage could grow 47% to 723k by 2029. The answer is kind of offering itself: if you are sure you will lose your job to AI, the best way would be to change your profession.
On the other hand, AI slump is nowhere to be seen, except among younger people. IAB Forum reports that employment in highly AI-exposed occupations grew about 1% between 2022 and 2025, while less-exposed ones fell 3%. Among 20–29-year-olds, AI-exposed jobs did shrink faster (3.8% vs 2.6% in 2025), but the authors blame mostly the recession.
Let's stay with AI. The transcript is paywalled, but the free part is already excellent and you should probabaly listen to the whole thing. Ethan Mollick tells Derek Thompson that everything and nothing is changing at the same time. And I see it in my daily work: AI is an extremely strong improvement for "single players" but much harder to accelerate teams in "multiplayer" mode. If you don't need to wait for someone, you’ll be crushing it, because the only thing you need to “convince” is your AI.
